The Cualanor estate in Dun Laoghaire has won the overall winner prize in the ‘2020 Urban Land Institute (ULI) and CBRE Excellence in Placemaking Awards’. These awards commend companies and community groups throughout Ireland that add to the public realm and create great places for communities in which to ‘live, work and play’. Entries were judged independently and ethically by a highly accomplished jury comprising planners, architects and academics, including the internationally renowned architect, urban designer and planner Daniel Ringelstein.

Tom Dunne, Chairman at ULI said: “These awards tie in with some of the key objectives of the Urban Land Institute in terms of identifying, showcasing and celebrating good design and placemaking in urban landscapes. The projects that particularly appealed to the judges were those that promoted health and wellbeing, offering connectivity, permeability and accessibility for all while also promoting the best in architecture and design. The concept of placemaking has never been more important than during the last six months. The winning entry demonstrates a lot of the characteristics of good placemaking within a modern residential scheme and is a worthy winner”.

In addition to winning the Dublin category, the Cualanor estate was selected as the overall winner in the 2020 competition. Occu Fairway and Occu Abbot form a large part of the Cualanor estate which has been built by the Cosgrave Group in recent years.

Commenting on this achievement, Adam Rooney from Occu said: “We have had a multi-year association with this location and hold a long standing belief that Cualanor/Honeypark is the best new large-scale living environment that has been created in South Dublin for decades. It is great to see Cosgrave Group receive the recognition they deserve for changing the landscape for the better in the area. This isn’t just a housing estate, it is a superior quality living realm, with a vibrant community which has been created from scratch – something Michael Cosgrave and his fantastic team care deeply about. The results and attention to detail will last for generations”.
